Hugh Sumner has devoted his career to criminal law. He began his legal career by serving two years as law clerk to President Judge Jay W. Myers. While serving in this clerkship, Sumner met Attorney John Arnold Crisman and joined Crisman's Berwick law firm as an associate. In 1986, Sumner became public defender of Columbia County, first as an assistant, then as chief. He has maintained a successful private law practice while serving the public interest as chief public defender.
Graduating with high honors from Mansfield State College with a degree in Criminal Justice Administration, Sumner worked a year to defray the costs of his schooling. He completed the three-year Juris Doctor program at Dickinson School of Law in Carlisle, Pennsylvania.
Sumner has also been active in his church and his community. He served as Bloomsburg Y.M.C.A. board president during the pivotal years when its Seventh Street facility was being constructed. He also served as a volunteer fundraiser for the expansion of the Bloomsburg Public Library. A longtime member of Wesley United Methodist Church, Bloomsburg, Sumner presided over the Trustee Board, served on administrative council and was a Sunday School Teacher.
Born in Lewisburg, Pennsylvania, Sumner grew up in Mifflinburg. He lives in Bloomsburg with his wife, Susan, and daughter, Megan.
